In Nov. 2022, John Mortland’s Honda CRV hit a curb on the 700 block of Copper Center Parkway in Colorado Springs. He called a tow truck, SWFT Towing, and they told him they would pick up the vehicle and bring it to Caliber Collision the next day. However, when he got to the auto repair shop, the vehicle was nowhere to be found. SWFT Towing then billed his insurance provider for 8 days of storage, totaling over $900.
A few days later, Mortland filed a complaint with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, which regulates tow trucks in the state. However, PUC officials told him they could not look into the issue because SWFT had agreed to take her vehicle and that she contacted her auto insurance provider. She also went to law enforcement, but was told it was a civil matter and not criminal.
The problem with SWFT may be its hiring practices. It hires new drivers straight out of trucking school. This means they don’t have the experience, skills and training to drive these rigs safely. This has led to a high crash rate for the company. One of the most notable cases was a 2019 jury verdict in Kansas where a Swift driver who failed to check her blind spot caused a collision with another vehicle that seriously injured the passenger. The jury deliberated for six hours and returned one of the largest personal injury verdicts in the state’s history.
